Volunteers - Field Steward for Shepherd Canyon

You will help us make sure Shepherd's Canyon park is taken care of by becoming the Shepherd Canyon "Park Steward" for the Oakland Parks Coalition ("OPC").

 

A Park Steward is somone who monitors the quality and condition of a local park.  The Steward works with appropriate city agencies to monitor park resources and ensure that the city responds in a timely and effective manner when a problem arises. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Attend the "Love Your Parks Day" event put on by OPC to learn about becoming a Park Steward (see www.oaklandparkscoalition.org/id6.html)
  • Monitor the conditions at Shephard Canyon to ensure the playing fields are in the proper and safe condition
  • Report any problems with the Shepherd Canyon fields or parking lot to City of Oakland Public Works Agency (OPWA) (see oaklandparkscoalition.org/id2.html)
  • Follow up to ensure problems are resolved
  • Coordinate and oversee Field Day with Shepherd Canyon Field Day Volunteer

     

Time Commitment

About 20 hours

Schedule

 

  • Check the date of the next "Love Your Parks Day" event.  (It was Sept. 27 in 2008.)
  • One Month Before Start of Season: Survey Shepherd's Park.  (This can be part of the "Love Your Parks Day" Event.)
    • Visit Shepherd Canyon and take stock of any issues: garbage, blight, abandoned vehicles, condition of gate at Escher Drive (open/closed), restrooms, grass watering, etc.
    • Report issues to Montclair Soccer Coordinator [[Determine who and place link to contacts]] and to OPWA 
    • Coordinate any necessary repair work or other fixes
  • During the Season
    • Continue to monitor any repair work or other fixes identified before the season
    • Continue to visit and monitor Shepherd Canyon weekly to identify any issues

Detailed Instructions

 

  • Contact Oakland Parks Coalition to register as Shepherd Canyon's Steward (oaklandparkscoalition@gmail.com or 510.287.2693)
  • The OPC "Love Your Parks Day" starts with a breakfast with other Steward volunteers to learn about surveying techniques.  You then break up into groups to survey the various parks in Oakland.  The survey results are the basis for OPC's annual report to the Live Enrichment Committee of the City Council.  
  • Complete the "Love Your Parks Day Survey," including reporting on  
    • Litter
    • Restrooms
    • Hardscape and Signage
    • Greenery
    • Drainage and Irrigation
    • Outdoor Sports Areas
    • Outdoor Children's Play Areas
  • Include Photos, captioned (max 3-4 photos)
