PCA Champion Responsibilities

  • Verify Participation - Poll all team parents on your team to see they've satisfied their PCA participation requirement. Goal: Ensure at least one parent from every family on your team has attended a PCA workshop once. Attendance at a past PCA workshop workshop satisfies this requirement.

  • Get the Word Out - send an email out to your team families about upcoming PCA workshops. Montclair typically offers three PCA workshops each Fall - at the two New Parents Nights* and at Coaches Day. Check the Calendar dates.

  • Be Your Team's Culture Keeper - Goal: keeping the sideline relentlessly positive for the kids. Let's face it, sometimes the adults on the sideline can be too intense. The culture keeper reminds the sideline that the Parents Cheer, Coaches Coach, and Referees are Human. Every parent and coach has signed an agreement to Honor the Game. This job involves monitoring your team's sideline during games to keep things positive for the kids.**

In this Role, you must have..

Willingness to be positive (seeking communication, not conflict) in encouraging parents and coaches to adhere to our Club's Positive Coaching culture. And willingness to be committed and creative in seeking solutions. Example: got a parent who just can't stop yelling instructions from the sideline? Try a wordless solution: hand them a Positive Pop, a lollipop (any kind will do, although we've found some prefer TootsiePops). It's a humorous reminder about "Parents Cheer - Coaches Coach," a great way to establish communication with that parent.

Detailed Instructions - What does the Team PCA Coordinator do?

1.       Make sure one adult from each family on your team has attended a PCA Workshop – Send email to your team parents introducing yourself as your team’s PCA Coordinator and ask whether or not they have attended a PCA workshop. See sample email below. If parents have not yet attended a PCA workshop, direct them to attend an upcoming PCA workshop. Montclair typically offers three PCA workshops each Fall: at our two New Parents Nights and at Coaches Day. MSC is hosting a PCA workshop as part of New Parents Night in late September. Check the Calendar an update soon about where and when.

All new parents in Montclair Soccer, regardless of age division, are required to attend a PCA workshop at least once. Parents do not need to attend a PCA workshop every season (although they are welcome to). Parents need only attend a PCA workshop once. Most parents attend a PCA workshop as part of New Parents Night when their child is young (in U6s or U8s). Although New Parents Nights are targeted towards U6 and U8 families, the PCA workshop is open to all new parents regardless of their child’s age division. Parents may attend a PCA workshop offered by other Jack London Clubs (example: Rockridge, Piedmont, Alameda..). Note: During any point in a season, a coach or referee may request that a specific parent attend a PCA workshop again as a “refresher” to reinforce positive coaching messages. This rarely happens, but if it does the Club Board may contact you in follow up. ALL coaches are required to attend a PCA workshop.

2.      Be Your Team's PCA Culture Keeper at Games - Let's face it, sometimes the adults on the sidelines at games can be too intense. Being the culture keeper involves monitoring your team's sideline during games to keep things positive for the kids. Every parent and coach has signed our League Zero Tolerance Policy, an agreement to Honor the Game.

Most of the time, this job is a cake walk. But at times, it may require being creative in seeking solutions. Example: got a parent who just can't stop yelling instructions from the sideline? You could walk up and quietly hand him/her a Positive Pop (any kind of lollipop will do). It's a humorous, simple reminder that Parents Cheer, Coaches Coach, and Referees are Human. Doing this job requires willingness to be positivein encouraging parents and coaches to adhere to our Club's Positive Coaching (PCA) culture.

* Most parents attend a PCA workshop as part of New Parents Night when their child is playing in our Under 8 (U8) or Under 6 (U6) programs. Montclair hosts two New Parents Nights every fall, one in late August and one in early September. New Parents Night is a 2 hour event that includes an orientation for new parents plus a PCA workshop. Although New Parents Nights are targeted towards U6 and U8 families, the events are open to all new parents, regardless of age division of their child. All new parents in Montclair Socc, regardless of age division, are required to attend a PCA workshop at least once. Parents do not need to attend a PCA workshop every season (although they are welcome to). Parents need only attend a PCA workshop once.

SAMPLE EMAIL FOR TEAM PCA COORDINATORS TO SEND TO THEIR TEAM FAMILIES AT THE START OF EACH SEASON

SUBJECT: From Your Team’s Positive Coaching (PCA) Coordinator

Dear Team Families,

I’m writing to introduce myself in the role of our Team’s PCA Coordinator. In this job I need to work with our team to make sure one adult from each of our team families attends a PCA workshop. Please respond to this email and let me know whether or not you’ve attended a PCA workshop in the past. (A simple “I attended a PCA workshop in the past” or “I have not yet attended a PCA workshop” is fine.)

If your family has not yet attended a PCA workshop, you need to attend one. Montclair is hosting a PCA workshop in late September 2008 as part of a New Parents Night. The date for this MSC New Parents Night should be soon on the Calendar at www.montclairsoccer.org. Parents may also attend a PCA workshop offered by other Jack London Clubs (example: Rockridge, Piedmont, Alameda..) if the date of the MSC New Parents Night does not work for your family. PCA workshops are only 90 minutes (and the ones hosted by Montclair always have some light fare and refreshments). After you’ve attended a PCA workshop, please send me an email update.

Note:All new parents in Montclair Soccer, regardless of age division, are required to attend a PCA workshop at least once. Parents do not need to attend a PCA workshop every season (although they are welcome to). Parents need only attend a PCA workshop once.

As our Team PCA Coordinator, I am also the point of contact should Positive Coaching questions or issues arise for our team. If you are interested in learning more about my role, see http://montclairsoccer.pbwiki.com/Volunteers+-+PCA+Coordinator

I’m looking forward to the upcoming season of soccer with our kids and their families.

Sincerely,

Your Team PCA Coordinator
